Southern Section Boys’ Basketball : Simi Valley Wins With Late Surge, 55-54

Simi Valley rallied from a 6-point deficit in the final 4 minutes Friday to defeat Thousand Oaks, 55-54, in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Todd Anderson of Thousand Oaks missed a potential game-winning shot with 5 seconds left and Steve Carnes grabbed the rebound to preserve Simi Valley’s 35th victory in its past 36 league games.

Carnes led Simi Valley (14-6, 7-1) with 18 points and added 5 rebounds and 3 assists. The junior guard made a key basket and Kenny Hood added a 3-point play as the Pioneers overtook Thousand Oaks in the final minutes.

Simi Valley Coach Dean Bradshaw credited his defense for the victory. “We played outstanding defense the last two or three minutes of the ballgame,” Bradshaw said. “We didn’t give up any real easy shots and they had a tough time getting into their offense.”

Darren McMaster led Thousand Oaks with 12 points.

Royal 48, Channel Islands 46 (OT)--With the Raiders trailing, 46-45, Matt Hicks hit a 3-point shot at the overtime buzzer to win the Marmonte League game at Royal.

Walter Matthews tipped in a shot at the end of regulation to force a 42-42 tie. Jerry Santiago paced Channel Islands (1-14, 0-8) with a game-high 21 points.

Russell Myers led Royal (9-11, 4-4) with 14.

Notre Dame 75, Harvard 59--Underdog Harvard tied score in the San Fernando Valley League game with 2 minutes left, but Notre Dame ran off 15 unanswered points to seal the win at Notre Dame.

Kenny Hicks scored 20 points and had 9 assists for Notre Dame (12-8, 6-0) and teammate Brian Jones, a senior forward, scored a game-high 31 points.

Rick Osterloh had a team-high 19 points for Harvard (10-9, 1-5).

Rio Mesa 61, Dos Pueblos 35--Eric Thomas scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Spartans in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa. Lester Smith added 15 points for Rio Mesa (16-3, 9-0).

Jeff Garner, Rio Mesa’s leading scorer averaging 22.7 points a game, scored a season-low 7 points.

Pasadena 74, Glendale 49--Idris Jones scored 17 points to lead the Bulldogs in a Pacific League game at Pasadena. Glendale (7-11, 2-4), led by Allen Faalnick’s 18 points, trailed, 22-6, after the first quarter and was never in the game.

Crescenta Valley 83, Muir 73--Senior guard Raffie Eskandarian scored 21 points and made 7 free throws in a 24-point fourth quarter to lead Crescenta Valley in the Pacific League game at Crescenta Valley.

Senior forward Brian Cortes had 19 points for the Falcons (13-6, 4-2) and teammate Paul Matijasevic had 13 points and 18 rebounds.

Montclair Prep 50, L.A. Baptist 47--Sophomore J. T. Billingslea scored 20 points, including 4 free throws in the closing minute, to lead Montclair Prep in an Alpha League game. Montclair Prep is 15-8, 4-2.

Billingslea had 9 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and Robert Thomas came off the bench to score 6 of his 14 points in the last quarter of the Alpha League game.

David Unter led L. A. Baptist with 12 points as the Knights fell to 14-6, 3-3 and out of a three-way tie for second place in the league.

Bell-Jeff 80, La Salle 69--Nick Sanderson had 24 points to lead Bell-Jeff in a rout over San Fernando Valley League opponent La Salle. Chris Dyer added 22 and Ray Witt had 12 points for Bell-Jeff.

St. Francis 68, Alemany 42--The Golden Knights took a 26-6 first-quarter lead in the Del Rey League game at Alemany.

Allen Freemon paced St. Francis (12-8, 3-3) with 29 points and Dominic Mumulo scored 11. Matt Garland led Alemany (3-15, 1-6) with 10 points.

Santa Clara 68, Agoura 52--Shon Tarver scored 23 points and Bubba Burrage added 18 as the Saints retained first place in a Frontier League game at Agoura. Santa Clara (16-3, 6-0) led, 27-15, at halftime and cruised after that.

Sophomore Sean Martin led the Chargers (6-9, 4-2), who had their 4-game winning streak broken, with 18 points. Jeff Ingalls added 14 points and 5 assists for Agoura.

Calabasas 73, Santa Paula 48--Dan Feldman had 18 and Jim Friedlander added 13 as Calabasas routed Santa Paula at Calabasas. Jason Young had 15 points and 8 assists for Calabasas.

Grace Community 77, South Bay Lutheran 58--Scott Lechuga paced the Hawks with 26 points in the Westside League game at Grace Community. Reserve forward David Orso added 12.

St. Genevieve 71, Chaminade 45--Forward Marc Colon scored a career-high 23 points and Ron Nielsen added 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Valiants won the San Fernando Valley League game at St. Genevieve.

Mike Cassidy scored 7 points and had 11 assists. Colin Havert paced the Eagles with 14 points.

Providence 53, Buckley 51--The Pioneers won their first Delphic League game in 2 years behind David Snyder’s 21 points and Tim Edgar’s 15 at Providence.

Camp Kilpatrick 81, Pilibos Armenian 43--James Scott had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Michael Boyd had 13 points and 12 assists for Camp Kilpatrick (14-4) in a nonleague game at Cal Lutheran.

Village Christian 42, Maranatha 38--Scott Danielson and Mike Curl each scored 12 points to lead the Crusaders in an Alpha League game at Village Christian. Ben Evans added 11 points for Village Christian (8-9, 5-1)
