In Brief : 2 U.S. Women Advance in Tennis

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Top-seeded American Patty Fendick and compatriot Beverley Bowes advanced today to the quarterfinals of the $75,000 Nutri-Metics International women’s tennis tournament. Fendick proved too strong for Australian Elizabeth Smylie, winning 6-2, 6-3 in a second round match of the 32-draw Virginia Slims series event. No. 8 Bowes had a much harder time before beating American Elise Burgin 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
In the other second-round singles match, Britain’s Jo Durie also moved into the last eight by beating Celine Cohen of Switzerland 5-7, 6-0, 7-6.
