Local News in Brief : Newport Beach : Innocent Plea Entered in Slaying of Doctor
A Hollywood man accused in the slaying of a Newport Beach opthalmologist pleaded not guilty Friday to felony charges that he entered the doctor’s oceanfront duplex and stabbed him to death.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 27 for Allen John Lindsey, 23, to determine if there is sufficient evidence to try him for the murder of Dr. Boonkird Chulapatrcheevin, 45.
Deputy Public Defender Anthony C. Kies, representing Lindsey, asked Newport Beach Municipal Judge Francis Munoz to lower the suspect’s $250,000 bail, but the judge refused.
Lindsey was arrested last month after Los Angeles police saw him driving the victim’s white Mercedes-Benz sedan, which was being sought in the investigation of the slaying, Newport Beach Police Officer Bob Oakley said.
Chulapatrcheevin was found dead on the floor of his apartment by his younger brother who had gone to the duplex after he failed to show up at his Santa Ana office one day last month.
Lindsey, who is being held in Orange County Jail, could face a prison term of 26 years to life if convicted, Kies said.
