Clayton’s Three-Pointer Lifts San Pasqual Past Escondido

Jimmy Clayton made his only shot of the night--a three-pointer with 5 seconds remaining--count to lift San Pasqual past Escondido, 56-54, in an Avocado League boys’ basketball game Friday at San Pasqual.

Escondido could not get a shot off in the final seconds as San Pasqual improved to 9-9 and 6-4. Escondido is 9-9 and 4-6.

With San Pasqual leading by nine with 4:30 left, Erik Meek (17 points, 16 rebounds) fouled out of the game. Escondido’s Chris Heintschel (14 points) then hit three three-pointers to tie the game.

San Pasqual had taken a 16-7 lead after 8 minutes and increased that to 40-30 by the end of the third quarter.

Brooks Barnhard scored a game-high 18 points for Escondido. Bryan Banner and Andy Loveland scored 12 each for San Pasqual.

In other Avocado League games:

El Camino 83, San Marcos 49--Travis Sweitzer led all scorers with 23 points, but El Camino had four players in double figures. Travis Gilley (17), Todd Swanson (14), Shaun Scurry (13) and Glen Ankton (12) led the Wildcats (16-5, 9-1). El Camino outrebounded San Marcos, 52-40. Swanson had 14 assists and 4 steals, Boyer added 16 rebounds and 6 blocks, and Ankton had 4 steals and 7 rebounds. San Marcos is 5-14, 1-8.

Ramona 59, Carlsbad 52--Sophomore Todd Dick made two free throws and a layup down the stretch, and Ramona held Carlsbad scoreless over the final 3 minutes at Ramona. Leading, 53-52, with 3 minutes left, Tony Newman (26 points) and Dick took control. Newman added 11 rebounds, and Dick and Troy Wood each had 9. Calvin Coleman scored 18 points for Carlsbad. Ramona is 8-12, 5-5.

Oceanside 62, Rancho Buena Vista 60--The Longhorns, down by nine with a minute to go, hit two three-pointers but it wasn’t enough as Oceanside held on. Jerry Garrett led Oceanside with 14 points. Todd Fellars’ 23 points led Rancho Buena Vista (9-12, 5-5).

City Western League

USDHS 66, Kearny 60--Peter Ellis led all scorers with 28 for USDHS (9-8, 2-4). Andre White hit four in a row in the third quarter to put Kearny (11-12, 2-4) up by one. USDHS took control in the fourth, converting 10 of 10 free throws in the final 3 minutes.

Clairemont 78, University City 66--Ray McDavid scored 41 points and had 12 rebounds and 10 assists for Clairemont (10-13, 2-4). Clairemont jumped to a 24-8 lead in the first quarter. University City is now 12-8 and 4-2.

Mission Bay 57, La Jolla 49--Brett Grebing had 10 points and 11 rebounds as host Mission Bay won its fourth game in a row to create a three-way tie for first place in the City West. Mission Bay (12-6, 4-2) made 6 of 9 first-quarter shots to take a 16-5 lead it never relinquished. Peter Wilson had 13 points and seven assists for Mission Bay, which was defeated by La Jolla (4-2) by five in the league opener. In that game, La Jolla controlled the boards. But this time, Mission Bay had a 42-23 rebound advantage. David Berteaux scored 16 points for La Jolla.

City Eastern League

Point Loma 62, Serra 53--Beau Pack scored a game-high 33 points, including seven three-pointers in the first half. Serra changed to man-to-man defense in the second half and Jim Griffin scored 16 of his 20 points to carry Point Loma (12-10, 3-3) the rest of the way.

Patrick Henry 75, Madison 65--Terence Hamilton scored 22 points and Jason Lonsdale and Bart Brandenburg had 17 apiece for Henry (12-8, 4-2). Brad Eaddy’s 25 points led Madison (12-9, 4-2).

Grossmont 3-A League

Monte Vista 79, El Capitan 51--Joe McNaull scored 26 points and had 18 rebounds and six blocked shots for Monte Vista (13-4, 6-0). Jeff Polinsky added 16 points. El Capitan is now 7-15, 1-6 in league.

Helix 53, Granite Hills 50--Rich Haar (game-high 15 points) made both ends of a one-and-one with 9 seconds left to seal the victory for Helix at home. John Pressler and Andy Merideth had 14 points each for Helix (15-5, 6-1). John Russell scored 12 points, and Scott Georgens added 10 before fouling out with a minute left for Granite Hills (14-7, 3-2).

Grossmont 2-A

Valhalla 90, El Cajon Valley 49--Valhalla only pressed in the first quarter, but that’s all it needed to roll to a 34-6 lead. Tony Clark scored 38 points, Tony Lee had 18 and Jon Scurlock 16 for Valhalla (14-7, 4-0). Litho Solomon scored 17 points for El Cajon Valley.

Santana 62, Grossmont 58--Santana outscored Grossmont, 18-5, in the fourth quarter at Grossmont. In the second half, Santana made 15 of 16 free throws, while Grossmont did not have an attempt. Dean Thrall scored 23 and Matt Panebianco 20 for Santana (13-6, 4-1). Todd Cady scored 30 points for Grossmont (6-14, 2-3).

Palomar League

Torrey Pines 57, Mt. Carmel 47--Mt. Carmel (14-7, 6-3) came within five points of Torrey Pines (22-1, 8-0) with 3:59 left, but the gap widened because of missed outside shots. Kevin Flanagan scored 14 of his 24 points in the second half, and Courtie Miller scored 14 points. Mt. Carmel outrebound Torrey Pines, 18-14.

Fallbrook 49, San Dieguito 42 (OT)--San Dieguito had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but Fallbrook (11-10, 6-3) won in overtime for the second time this week. Travis Teagle and Tim Cummin led Fallbrook with 11 and 10 points. Cummin hit the first jumper in overtime, and Fallbrook never relinquished its lead. Matt de le Pena (15) and Brian Malewicz (12) led San Dieguito.

Poway 72, Vista 55--After dropping a league game to Mt. Carmel Wednesday, third-ranked Poway rediscovered its shooting game (29 of 61). Adam Jones (18), Greg Sorrell (17), Gabby Awbrey (13), Jon Culbertson (13) and Jay Blankenbeckler (10) led Poway (17-3, 6-3). John Hauser (15) led Vista (6-15, 2-7). Sorrell added 9 rebounds.

City Central League

Crawford 56, Hoover 45--Hoover (1-18, 0-6) took the lead late in the third quarter, but Crawford (14-6, 4-2) outscored the Cardinals, 16-2, in the fourth. Tracy Halton led Crawford with 21 points. Chris Johnson added 13 points and had 17 rebounds.

Christian 54, St. Augustine 47--David Jeremiah (15) and Tim Barkett (14) combined for 29 of Christian’s total points. Bryan Cantwell, Paul Mossuto and Eric Dent led St. Augustine with 11, 10 and 10 points.

Metro Conference

Southwest 74, Coronado 53--Adalberto Silva had 33 points and 10 rebounds as Southwest continued its undefeated run through the conference. Will Tate added 14 points and Sean Swensen 10 for fifth-ranked Southwest (18-5, 10-0). Southwest, with has won a school-record 12 games in a row, outscored Coronado, 40-20, in the second half. Derek Wastilla had 22 points for Coronado (6-5).

Castle Park 73, Montgomery 58--Brad Grady scored 21 points and Gerardo Gomez added 10 for Castle Park. Albert Maldonado had 19 for Montgomery.

Chula Vista 34, Marian 31--Sean Desmond (12 points) hit a 12-foot jump shot and made two free throws with 5 seconds left to lead Chula Vista (11-13, 8-3) at Marian. Jerry Conlin scored 12 points for Marian (2-13, 2-7). The game was tied at the half, and Chula Vista outscored Marian, 5-4, in the third quarter. Explaining the low score, Marian Coach Bob Swisher said, “Both teams are usually very patient on offense.”

Girls City Western League

Mission Bay 56, La Jolla 40--Cristina Willis scored a game-high 22 to lead Mission Bay (14-7, 6-0).

Avocado League

Oceanside 36, Rancho Buena Vista 30--Mildred Conston scored 18 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked two shots to lead Oceanside (16-6, 9-1). Tanya Lee had 10 assists and 4 steals for Oceanside.

City Central League

Our Lady of Peace 75, Christian High 45--De Beavpanlant scored a game-high 21, and April Velle added 18 to lead OLP.

San Diego 57, Lincoln 35--Melonie Covey scored 21 to lead San Diego (8-8, 4-2). Nene Hilbert added 17 and 21 rebounds.

Grossmont 2A

Santana 65, Grossmont 44--Santana (17-2, 5-0) clinched the Grossmont 2-A League title bydefeating Grossmont (5-15, 0-5). Rebecca Aase scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds for Santana. Michele Paradise also had 12 rebounds. Santana led, 31-16, at halftime.
