Rancho Santa Fe, an exclusive residential community in central San Diego County, has been designated as a California historical landmark. The designation by the California Office of Historic Preservation, while prestigious, is mostly symbolic, officials of the unincorporated community said. Landmark status was approved because Rancho Santa Fe, established in 1918, is one of the earliest planned communities in the state and because the existing boundaries still mirror the perimeters of the 6,200-acre property when it was a Mexican land grant known as Rancho San Dieguito.
