World : West German Missile ‘Shot Down’
BONN — The West German government today suspended a project to build a short-range missile after a political firestorm here and in East Germany greeted the news that such a weapon was even being considered.
Government spokesman Friedhelm Ost told reporters that Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Defense Minister Rupert Scholz had decided to put off plans to let West German and U.S. aerospace firms develop the missile. After word of the project leaked Tuesday, the opposition Social Democrats accused Kohl of pursuing arms projects behind the back of Parliament.
