Local News in Brief : Alleged Gang Leader Guilty in Drug Case
A man identified by authorities as a top lieutenant for the Grape Street Crips street gang was convicted Wednesday in Los Angeles on narcotics charges and faces a mandatory prison sentence of at least 20 years.
Dion Floyd, 27, who federal prosecutors said was supervising narcotics operations in St. Louis for the gang, was convicted of one count of conspiracy and one count each of distributing cocaine and rock cocaine.
Assistant U.S. Atty. Jeffrey C. Eglash said Floyd set up a drug deal with an informant and had his common-law wife, Lavada Floyd, who remains a fugitive, deliver a kilogram of cocaine and half a kilogram of rock cocaine to the informant and an undercover narcotics agent in South-Central Los Angeles. U.S. District Judge Robert M. Takasugi set sentencing for April 17.
Because of two prior narcotics convictions, Floyd faces a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison.
