A pipe bomb placed in a Copley Newspapers vending machine exploded Thursday night on the sidewalk outside the Viewpoint Plaza Industrial Center in Kearny Mesa, the San Diego Fire Department reported.

Although no one was injured, “the potential was certainly there,” a Fire Department spokesman said.

Parts of the stand, which held the San Diego Union and the Tribune, were found nearly 100 feet from its original location. A security guard standing about 100 yards away witnessed the explosion about 10 p.m. and telephoned police.

Investigators at the site, 9601 Ridgehaven Court, found a piece of 1 1/4-inch PVC pipe that they believed had been packed with gunpowder, the spokesman said.

Investigators said the crude bomb was probably ignited by a fuse. Police said they had no suspects Friday and the investigation was continuing.
