City Section Boys’ Basketball : Lofton’s 26 Give El Camino Real a Title
Behind senior forward Brent Lofton’s game-high 26 points, El Camino Real High defeated Canoga Park on Friday night, 64-41, to clinch the West Valley League title.
Ken Findley added 15 points and Charlie Crow had 12 points for El Camino Real (9-8, 6-4 in league play), which secured a share of the league title by defeating Chatsworth on Wednesday.
Canoga Park’s Sean Reyes scored 15 points and Mike Moses added 10 points for the Hunters (2-18, 0-10).
Chatsworth 64, San Fernando 56--Sam Kim made a 10-foot jump shot at the end of the third quarter to give the Chancellors a lead they never surrendered in a West Valley League game at San Fernando. Ben Boyd paced the Tigers (9-13, 3-7) with 19 points, including five three-point baskets. Kim, Garrick and Edwards scored 18, 16 and 13 for Chatsworth (12-8, 5-5), which finished in second place.
North Hollywood 65, Van Nuys 50--North Hollywood out-streaked the host Wolves and finished undefeated in Mid-Valley League play. The Huskies (15-4, 10-0) scored seven unanswered points to open the game, and Van Nuys (4-15, 1-9) answered with 11 consecutive points. But North Hollywood countered with a 12-point run to take a 19-11 lead and permanent control.
Junior center Dana Jones scored 19 points, cleared 10 rebounds and blocked five shots and Tommy Byrdsong added 20 points and seven assists to lead North Hollywood.
Reseda 88, Monroe 67--Junior guard Mike Basowski scored 29 points, including eight three-point baskets, to lead the playoff-bound Regents (9-10, 7-3) in the Mid-Valley League finale at Reseda.
Mario Jordan scored 23 and Coley Kyman added 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Reseda. Monroe (3-14, 2-8) was led by Derril White (22 points) and Jesse Wallace (14).
Grant 71, Sylmar 45--East Valley League champion Grant concluded the regular season with a victory despite committing 21 turnovers at Sylmar (3-13, 1-9). Nate Conner led Grant (17-3, 9-1) with 18 points.
Birmingham 86, Poly 52--Glenn Sucich helped Birmingham blow away the Parrots in the second half of an East Valley League game at Poly. The victory forged a second-place tie in the final league standings between the Braves (9-11, 5-5) and Poly (10-10, 5-5).
The teams will meet again at a neutral site to be determined on Wednesday to break the tie and establish the league’s second-place entry in the 3-A Division playoffs.
Sucich, a senior, made six of nine three-point shots and recorded game-high totals of 33 points and 16 rebounds. He scored 15 points in the final period. The Braves made 28 of 46 field-goal attempts (60.9%).
Eagle Rock 87, Sherman Oaks CES 70--Michael Epps of Eagle Rock outgunned Marcus Littlejohn of host Sherman Oaks in a Northeast League game. Epps scored 50 points, including eight three-point baskets. Littlejohn, who also had 14 rebounds, scored 30 points, including four three-point baskets. Don Daily added 14 points for Sherman Oaks CES (9-11, 4-8).
