Anti-Semitic Graffiti Painted on Brazilian Cathedral by Vandals
BRASILIA, Brazil — Vandals spray-painted anti-Semitic slogans Wednesday on the Metropolitan Cathedral, a landmark in this inland capital.
Graffiti reading “The CNBB is Jewish” and “The Amazon is ours, Jewish ecologists get out” were painted on a wall outside the cathedral, designed by the prominent Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1967.
A spokesman for the CNBB, the Portuguese acronym for the Brazilian Roman Catholic Bishops’ Conference, called the graffiti “absurd and ridiculous.”
The bishops’ conference often has spoken out against destruction of the Amazon rain forest and the invasion of Indian lands by miners and wood cutters.
