P.M. BRIEFING : AT&T; to Disperse Decision-Making
NEW YORK — American Telephone & Telegraph Co. will decentralize in coming months by turning over decision-making authority to the heads of 15 to 25 business units, the company said today.
“More of the basic business decisions in the future will be made by these individual business units rather than an overlay of top corporate executives,” said Walter Murphy, an AT&T; spokesman. The presidents of AT&T;’s five major operating groups will be renamed group executives and will oversee sets of business units that will have direct responsibility for profits and losses, the company said.
