The Interstate Commerce Commission approved today a five-year antitrust exemption that allows a company owned by major railroads to continue controlling rail car purchases.

The company, Trailer Train Co. of Chicago, had asked for a 15-year extension over the objections of the Justice Department, the state of Oregon and a major rail car builder. The commission imposed some conditions on the arrangement and the final wording was being worked out, said ICC spokesman Dennis Watson.
