Soroptimist International Honors Two From Irvine at Its Awards Banquet

Irvine student Jane Chin Deng, 17, a University High School senior, and Grace Hung Wu, 40, an Irvine resident, will be honored with others by Soroptimist International of Irvine at its annual awards banquet Tuesday at the Holiday Inn in Irvine.

Jane was named first-place winner of the Youth Citizenship Award for outstanding contributions to home, school, community, country and the world. Wu won first place in the Training Award, given to promote upward mobility in mature women. Both will receive $600.

Second place in the citizenship category was won by Anh T. Lu, 17, a Woodbridge High School senior. Second place in the training award was won by Pamela Sue Maupin, 39, of Huntington Beach. Both will receive $300.

Former Orange Coast College catcher Brent Mayne, now a student and catcher at Cal State Fullerton, was named Top College Player of the Year in the Southern California Baseball Hot Stove League sponsored by Loyola Marymount University.

Mayne, son of OCC head baseball coach Mike Mayne, batted .403 last year in the Big West Conference (formerly known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference) and once hit safely in 39 consecutive games.

Newport Beach resident Stephanie Brown, who holds a bachelor of arts degree in English and masters degrees in fine arts and library science, has been appointed as library specialist at the San Juan Capistrano Regional Branch of the Orange County Public Library.

Cyril Brickfield, former executive director of the American Assn. of Retired Persons and considered one of America’s most prominent senior Americans, has been named grand marshal of the opening ceremonies parade April 1 for the Laguna Hills Leisure World 25th anniversary celebration.

In addition to a series of cultural events, several sporting activities such as the National Women’s 65-70 Hardcourt Tennis Championship, an equestrian show and a golf exhibition featuring Los Angeles Rams and Los Angles Raiders football players, will be held.

“The aging of America is bursting on the scene like nothing we have seen before,” said Brickfield, 69.

Leisure World has 21,000 residents living on a 2,100-acre site.

Jeff Reitz, 16, of Huntington Beach, has earned the Eagle Award, Boy Scouting’s highest award. He is the 40th to earn the award in Troop 226 since its inception in May 31, 1964. The Huntington Beach High School sophomore will be recognized at a court of honor on March 4.

Mission Viejo resident Frederick Aronowitz, chief scientist of Rockwell International Corp.’s autonetics marine systems division in Anaheim, has been named winner of the Institute of Electronics & Electronics Engineers 1988 Kershner Award. The honor is given for outstanding achievement in the technology of navigation and positioning equipment, systems or practices.

Newport Beach watercolorist official artist for the 1987 America’s Cup Eagle Challenge in Australia as well as earning the official designation as a Coast Guard artist, was presented with a resolution by Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach) to honor her for her support to nonprofit organizations through the use of her art.

Her watercolor paintings of the state’s most popular points of interest were exhibited in the state Capitol the last week of January, when the resolution was approved on the state Senate floor.

The resolution read in part: “Ruth Hynds has utilized her artistic depictions in support of nonprofit organizations . . . and is deserving of the highest honors and commendations from the state of California.”

William Plumb, 40, of Laguna Beach, who had been serving as program development director, has been named executive director of the Laguna Beach Community Clinic that provides low cost dental, medical and legal care. It is a United Way agency.
