College Basketball Roundup : It’s Louisville’s Turn for a Fantastic Finish

Freshman Everick Sullivan hit a three-pointer with one second left in overtime as 10th-ranked Louisville defeated seventh-ranked Florida State, 78-77, in a Metro Conference game Thursday night at Tallahassee, Fla.

In their last meeting in Louisville, 10 days earlier, the Seminoles won 81-78. The Cardinals lost again Sunday at UCLA, 77-75, on a controversial goaltending call against Pervis Ellison at the buzzer.

Louisville, 18-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play, moved back into first place in the Metro Conference, a half-game ahead of Florida State (19-3, 7-2).

Kenny Payne had 24 points and 12 rebounds for Louisville, and Ellison had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Tony Dawson scored 21 points for Florida State, Tat Hunter added 19 points and 15 rebounds and George McCloud had scored 18 points.

Hunter tipped in a missed shot by Dawson at the buzzer in regulation time to tie the score, 69-69, and seemingly won it for the Seminoles in overtime.

He converted a three-point play with 1:54 left in overtime to put Florida State ahead, 77-73, but Ellison scored to pull the Cardinals within two points.

Keith Williams fouled Dawson, who missed the front end of a one-and-one attempt with eight seconds left, setting up Sullivan’s winning shot from the left corner.

Sullivan came off the bench to score 17 points.

Illinois 75, Michigan State 56--Kenny Battle scored 19 points as the fifth-ranked Illini defeated the Spartans in a Big Ten game at East Lansing, Mich.

Lowell Hamilton added 17 points for Illinois (21-3, 8-3).

Steve Smith had 19 points off the bench for Michigan State (12-9, 3-8).

Michigan 84, Purdue 70--Glen Rice scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half to lead the 13th-ranked Wolverines past the Boilermakers in a Big Ten game at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Kip Jones had a career-high 25 points for Purdue (10-14, 3-8), surpassing his previous best of 21 against Wichita State in 1987.

Michigan is 19-5 and 7-4.

North Carolina 99, Wake Forest 76--Steve Bucknall scored 21 points as the eighth-ranked Tar Heels beat the Demon Deacons in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina is 21-5 overall and 7-3 in the ACC. Wake Forest is 11-11 and 2-8.

Rick Fox scored 17 points for North Carolina (21-5, 7-3) and Kevin Madden had 15. J.R. Reid scored nine points before he fouled out, ending a streak of 37 ACC regular-season games in which he had scored at least 10 points.

Cal Boyd scored 24 points for Wake Forest (11-11, 2-8).

Notre Dame 80, LaSalle 78--Joe Fredrick scored 24 points, including the game-winning shot with three seconds left, as the Fighting Irish beat the Explorers at South Bend, Ind.

Keith Robinson scored 24 points for Notre Dame (15-5), including a basket that tied the score, 78-78, with 31 seconds left.

Lionel Simmons scored 22 points for LaSalle (21-5), and Bob Johnson added 20.

West Virginia 88, Massachusetts 55--Herbie Brooks and Tracy Shelton each scored 14 points to lead the 14th-ranked Mountaineers past the Minutemen at Morgantown, W.Va., extending the nation’s longest winning streak to 20 games in an Atlantic 10 Conference game.

Darryl Prue had 13 points and Chris Brooks added 11 for the Mountaineers (21-2, 14-0).

Jim McCoy scored 23 points for Massachusetts (9-14, 4-10) and John Tate added 10.

Brigham Young 84, UTEP 76-- Michael Smith scored 30 points and Andy Toolson added 20 to lead the Cougars to a win over the Miners in a Western Athletic Conference game at Provo, Utah.

BYU (11-12, 4-7) knocked UTEP (19-5, 8-4) out of a share of first place with New Mexico, which defeated Utah, 79-76, Thursday night.
