Johan Kriek, seeded 16th, defeated No. 1-seeded Andre Agassi, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, and unseeded Jimmy Arias upended third-seeded Tim Mayotte, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, Thursday to move into the quarterfinals of the $415,000 Volvo Indoor Championship at Memphis, Tenn.
Michael Chang also pulled off an upset, beating fifth-seeded Mikael Pernfors, 7-5, 6-1.
No. 2-seeded Jimmy Connors survived the rash of upsets with a 6-2, 6-2 win over South Africa’s Pieter Aldrich, and No. 6 Brad Gilbert beat Shuzo Matsuoko of Japan, 6-2, 6-0.
John McEnroe celebrated his 30th birthday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands to reach the quarterfinals in the $492,500 Stella Artois championships at Milan, Italy.
Alexander Volkov of the Soviet union upset fourth-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 7-6, 7-5; Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia surprised sixth-seeded Yannick of France, 7-6, 7-6, and top-seeded Boris Becker beat Guy Forget of France, 6-3, 7-6.
Third-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria overcame Ann Henricksson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, and moved into the quarterfinals of the $300,000 Virginia Slims of Washington at Fairfax, Va.
