College Roundup : Patuano Pitches In for Chapman : Reliever Singles In Winning Run With His First At-Bat
Relief pitcher Matt Patuano, in his first at-bat for Chapman College, singled to right field to drive in the winning run as the Panthers defeated Biola, 6-5, in 10 innings in a nonconference baseball game Thursday at Hart Park in Orange.
Patuano was forced into the lineup in place of the designated hitter when he entered the game in the eighth inning. He drove in Mike Grahovac, who had singled to open the inning and moved to third after two groundouts.
Chapman (5-7) had scored three runs in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Jody Garcia hit a home run, his second of the game, to open the ninth for the Panthers. With two outs, Jason Rolish struck out but reached first on a dropped third strike. Chris Cutliff then hit the next pitch for a home run to tie it, 5-5. Biola is 1-2.
In another nonconference baseball game:
Cal State Fullerton 7, Arizona 3--Freshman shortstop Randy Graves had a two-run double in the sixth to lead the Titans (4-2). Rex Peters added a home run, his second, for Fullerton. Arizona scored three runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Titans added three in the eighth.
Danny DeVille (1-0) pitched 6 2/3 innings for Fullerton and Lance Dickson (0-2) took the loss for Arizona (10-2). Peters, Graves and Rod Klopfer had two hits each for Fullerton. Brent Mayne, who missed last weekend’s Stanford series with the flu, had a hit and scored a run for Fullerton.
In the Arizona Wildcat softball tournament:
Cal State Fullerton 2, Hawaii 1--Missy Coombes singled home Deanna Sanchez in the bottom of the eighth for Fullerton (4-0). Ann Van Dortrecht (2-0) got the victory.
Cal State Fullerton 6, Northwestern 1--Kristine Glomboske had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Titans. Angie Bryant (2-0) pitched a complete game for Fullerton.
In Big West Conference women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 6, Cal State Long Beach 3--Kathy Rose and Melissa Vaccaro combined to beat Cory Crigger and Danelle DeCosmo, 7-5, 7-6, to clinch the match for host Irvine.
In nonconference softball:
Southern California College 6, Occidental 4--Connie Brazell had two hits and scored twice for host SCC (1-2). It was the season opener for Occidental.
In the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.:
Loyola Marymount 3, UC Irvine 1--Loyola earned its first conference victory of the season with a 15-5, 17-15, 12-15, 15-10 decision at Irvine. Kevin Norman had 20 kills for Irvine (3-11, 0-6).
