Local News in Brief : School Stands and Receives
Garfield High School and teacher Jaime Escalante have received six bronze plaques commemorating the 200th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
The plaques were created by artist Brett-Livingstone Strong and are being presented to schools around the country to promote “the Constitution spirit.” In the case of Garfield, they were made available by the California Bicentennial Commission to salute Escalante, whose success in teaching math to inner-city students was the subject of the film, “Stand and Deliver.”
Garfield, in East Los Angeles, is the first high school in the country to receive the plaques.
Strong, who has also created a National Monument to the Presidency, which will be dedicated by President Bush in April, was at Garfield for a presentation ceremony.
