The Preps : Girls’ Basketball Playoffs : No More Days Off for County Teams
After an opening round filled with byes, the Southern Section girls’ basketball playoffs get into full swing tonight with second-round play.
All games are at 7:30 p.m.
In the 4-AA division, which had only three first-round games scheduled Thursday and the rest of the teams off with byes, top-seeded Mission Viejo (21-4) plays at San Bernardino (12-11).
The Diablos are led by Jennifer Rohrig, who averages 13.5 points a game, and point guard Tina Ranker, who averages a Southern Section-leading 11.1 assists a game.
In other 4-AA games: Valencia (16-9) plays at Cajon (15-8), Downey (19-6) is at Tustin (15-10), Orange (14-8) is at University (19-6) and Kennedy (11-9) is at Canyon (19-4).
In the 5-AA, Fountain Valley and El Toro, the county’s two remaining teams, are on the road tonight. Fountain Valley (17-8) plays at Palmdale (14-10) and El Toro (19-9) is at Simi Valley (15-11).
In the 5-A, Mater Dei (21-5) plays at Santa Barbara (18-7); Ocean View (23-3) plays host to Capistrano Valley (19-7) and Edison (14-10) is at Thousand Oaks (22-4).
In the 4-A, fourth-seeded Katella (22-3) is at Bishop Montgomery (14-8); Cypress (19-7) visits third-seeded Los Altos (25-1); La Habra (18-6) plays host to Temple City (10-12); Burbank Burroughs (17-7) is at defending 2-A runner-up Woodbridge (20-5); Riverside North (19-5) plays host to Fullerton (16-7) and Loara (17-11) plays host to Artesia (17-5).
In the 3-A, Brea-Olinda, the top-seeded team, is the designated visiting team but will play host to Sierra Vista because Sierra Vista is hosting a Southern Section wrestling tournament. Brea is 23-2; Sierra Vista is 9-13.
In other 3-A games:
Rancho Alamitos (20-3) is at St. Lucy’s (18-8); Foothill (16-9) is at third-seeded La Quinta (21-3) and Savanna (18-8) is at Covina (16-6).
In the 2-AA, Whittier Christian (15-7) plays at second-seeded Banning of Riverside County (18-5).
In the Small Schools division, Liberty Christian (15-4), the No. 3 seeded team, is at Ribet Christian of La Canada (10-9).
