Southern Section Girls’ Basketball Playoffs : University Overcomes Its Mistakes and Orange in 62-49 Win
University High School survived 39 turnovers to take a 62-49 victory over Orange on Saturday in a Southern Section 4-AA second-round girls’ basketball playoff game at University.
Shelley Davis scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Denise Gandara added 12 points and 11 rebounds for University (20-6).
University scored 16 consecutive points to take a 25-8 lead in the second quarter and led, 34-22, at the half.
Davis scored 10 of her points in the third quarter as University outscored the Panthers, 15-3, in the first 7 minutes to take a 49-25 lead.
University, which led by as much as 26 points in the fourth quarter, also got 10 points from reserve forward Michelle Cummings.
“It was kind of ugly out there with all those turnovers,” said University Coach Doug Sorey, whose team will play Camarillo in Thursday’s quarterfinals. “They got 10 of their second-quarter points on free throws and they kept coming at us. They played a very physical game out there and they just didn’t give up.”
Ginnie Hall led Orange (14-9) with 19 points.
