Sports Briefs : Lakewood’s Top Athlete
Lisa Longaker, a pitcher who led the UCLA women’s softball team to the 1988 National Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship, has been named the Lakewood Youth Sports Hall of Fame Athlete of the Year. A graduate of Mayfair High School, Longaker also was named an All-American and Pac-10 Conference player of the year.
6 Named to Hall of Fame
Six new members, including former Whittier College and National Football League coaches George Allen and Don Coryell, will be inducted into the Whittier College Athletic Hall of Fame at a luncheon at noon March 9 at the Ettinger Faculty and Alumni Center on the campus. The other inductees will be Gary Jones (baseball), Ralph Dudley (basketball), Mike Ciacci (football) and Orlando Brenes (soccer). Tickets for the luncheon are $12. Catalina Marathon Date Set
The Catalina Marathon and 10-K runs will be held March 11 and 12. The events will begin at 9 a.m. March 11 in front of the Avalon Casino and at 7 a.m. March 12. The marathon will cover 26 miles, 385 yards from Two Harbors to Avalon. Because of the difficulty of the terrain, only runners who can prove that they have run two other marathons of one 50-mile race in the last six months will be allowed to participate. Women’s Softball Clinic
The UCLA women’s softball program will conduct a clinic for interested players and coaches from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 4 at the campus intramural field. Fees range from $20 to $30. For more information, call 825-8699.
Girls Basketball League
The Olympias Girls Development League will hold classes in basketball fundamentals for sixth- through 12th-grade girls March 4 and 11 at Victoria Park, 192nd Street and Avalon Boulevard, Carson. 49ers Are 12-0 in Baseball
The Cal State Long Beach baseball team, under new Coach Dave Snow, is off to a 12-0 start. The 49ers swept two games this week in Tucson from No. 2-ranked University of Arizona. In a 14-7 victory Tuesday, Todd Guggiana hit a grand slam and Deryk Hudson hit a two-run homer.
