City Section Soccer Playoffs : San Fernando’s Season Ends With Lone Setback, 2-1
San Fernando picked a bad time to suffer its first loss of the high school soccer season: the second round of the City playoffs.
But a pair of second-half Bell goals brought the Tigers’ season to a close in a 2-1 loss at Bell on Thursday.
San Fernando (5-1-6) opened the scoring 37 minutes into the first half on a long pass that Bell goalkeeper Israel Martinez misjudged.
In the second half, Bell took control. With four minutes elapsed, Jose Medina scored on a penalty kick after being elbowed in the jaw. Jose Rodriguez scored the game-winner with 12 minutes left on a crossing shot from four yards.
“It was a fast-paced game and we controlled the action the entire match,” Bell Coach William Albano said. Bell (19-2-2) had 19 shots on goal to the Tigers’ 10.
Seven yellow cards were handed out in the physical game.
San Pedro 2, Chatsworth 1--San Pedro’s Alberto Chavez scored two second-half goals to bring the second-seeded Pirates back from a 1-0 halftime deficit in a quarterfinal match at San Pedro.
Senior Chris Horn scored at the 25-minute mark for Chatsworth (11-6-3).
GIRLS
Grant 4, Belmont 0--Sophomore forward Tatum Langford scored three goals in the first half of a first-round playoff game at Grant.
Goalkeeper Elana Tuizer, a junior, recorded her first shutout for Grant (10-2-3), the second-seeded team in the playoffs.
