Southern Section Soccer Playoffs : Royal Girls Win Marathon at South Torrance, 4-3
With four starters sidelined by injuries, the Royal High girls’ soccer team endured a marathon three-hour match that included four 10-minute overtime periods--two of which were sudden death--in the 4-A Division playoffs and beat South Torrance, 4-3, at South Torrance.
The score was tied, 1-1, at the end of regulation and neither team scored in overtime. Penalty kicks determined the outcome.
Traci Hamann, Tania Schraml and Tara Bunker made penalty kicks for Royal (21-1-2). Hamann, a halfback, also scored with 22 minutes remaining in the first half of regulation play.
In other girls’ matches:
Agoura 4, Bishop Montgomery 0: Senior Julie Tingle scored three goals and added an assist to lead top-seeded Agoura over host Bishop Montgomery in a 3-A Division quarterfinal match.
Vanessa Martin also scored for Agoura (24-0), which extended its winning streak to 39 games over two seasons.
Alemany 1, Hacienda Heights Wilson 0--Robin Renaud scored the only goal on an assist from Teresa Gill with 10 minutes left as the Indians (18-6-2) posted their third consecutive 2-A Division shutout of the playoffs. It also was goalie Cammie Tubbs’ 14th shutout of the season.
BOYS
Agoura 2, Troy 1--Nelson Townes scored with 2:30 remaining to lift visiting Agoura into the semifinals of the 1-A Division playoffs.
Agoura (22-2-1), seeded No. 1 in the playoffs, trailed, 1-0, until Dominic Zapata took a pass from Joey Medaglia and booted an 18-yard goal with about eight minutes to play.
Chaminade 3, Fillmore 2--Brady Mitchell took a pass from Jorge Chavez with about 4 1/2 minutes to play and scored from eight yards as the Eagles overcame a 2-0 deficit in a Small Schools Division quarterfinal at Fillmore.
Morro Bay 3, L.A. Baptist 2--Senior Shane Wight scored both Knight goals to give him 26 for the season in the Small Schools Division quarterfinal match at Morro Bay.
Goalkeeper Dan Piangerelli had a school-record 20 saves for L. A. Baptist (17-6-1).
