Carbide Pays Compensation: Union Carbide handed over $465 million to the Indian Supreme Court to compensate victims of the Bhopal poison gas tragedy. The Danbury, Conn.-based chemical company delivered the money ahead of the March 23 deadline set by the court last week when it handed down its $470-million judgement. Some $5 million had been dispersed previously. Shortly after the checks were handed over, an Indian lawyer filed a writ asking the Supreme Court to increase the compensation judgment to $600 million. The court will hear the case and other suits filed against the settlement on March 15.
