WORLD : AF Jets Intercept Soviet Bombers
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Two Air Force F-15 jet fighters encountered two Soviet bombers flying near Alaska’s Aleutian Island chain and steered them away, Elmendorf Air Force Base officials reported today. The closest the Soviet bombers came to land was 138 miles south of Adak.
Until about six months ago, Soviet military aircraft had been using the periphery of Alaska for stepped-up training over the previous two years, and Air Force encounters with the Russians showed a marked increase. But Soviet air activity around Alaska has been dropping off in recent months.
