More than 5 million new households will be formed in California by the year 2020, an increase of 58% from 1985, the state Department of Finance estimates. But the average size of households is expected to fall from 2.73 people in 1985 to 2.6 people, reported the department, which linked the 5% decline to the state’s aging population. Southern California counties will experience the biggest increases in households.
