Pico Rivera : Council Votes to Skip Annual Beauty Pageant
The city cannot justify spending up to $10,000 to sponsor the Miss Pico Rivera contest this year, and the City Council has voted to drop consideration of the matter until next year.
Until last year, the annual beauty pageant had been sponsored by the Pico Rivera Chamber of Commerce. But the group’s board voted to drop the event, saying it was too time-consuming and expensive.
The City Council then formed an ad hoc committee to consider whether the city should become involved in the contest. In a memo, Councilmen Gil de la Rosa and Garth Gardner said the contest has been a rewarding experience for the approximately 20 women who participate each year, but questioned whether the program “is really providing a service.
“We are unaware of any recent complaints because there has been no contest,” they said in the memo, “nor are we aware of any clamor from the community for such a promotion.”
The council voted to have the ad hoc committee reconsider the issue in March, 1990.
