High School Baseball : Hoover Rallies to Give Coach 400th Win
Hoover High scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to defeat La Salle, 7-2, Friday in a nonleague game and give Coach Bob Cooper his 400th career victory.
Cooper, who has coached at Hoover for 14 years after stints at Elsinore and Harvard highs, reached the milestone in his 25th year of coaching.
“I’ve had some real good luck,” Cooper said. “And I’ve had some good teams.”
Cooper’s career mark stands at 400-197, but it took a six-run rally in the sixth for Hoover (3-0) to wipe out a 2-1 deficit.
Eight Hoover starters hit safely, including David Berkey, who was two for three. Berkey recorded his first save in relief of Bryan Day (1-0), who pitched five innings.
In other nonleague games:
St. Genevieve 8, Palmdale 2--Roland De La Maza scattered five hits and struck out 12 at Branford Park. De La Maza (2-1) struck out seven in a row during the first, second and third innings and had 12 in the first five innings.
De La Maza, who struck out 21 batters in a 10-inning victory over Palmdale last year, has 31 strikeouts in 16 innings.
Royal 5, Murphy 4--Dennis Gildehauf scored from third base, breaking a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth, when Murphy shortstop Larry Bator booted a Steve Bernstein ground ball. Bill Egan struck out 11 for Royal in 6 2/3 innings.
Calabasas 7, Oak Park 0--Brett Resnick was four for five with a run batted in, scored two runs and had two steals, and Dave Kalman was two for five with two RBIs to lead Calabasas (2-1) at Oak Park. Scott Faer, Brett Farlow and Dan Glassman combined for a two-hitter. Glassman faced eight batters and struck out five.EL SEGUNDO TOURNAMENT
Hart 13, Long Beach Poly 5--Junior Lance Migita had four hits and scored three runs to lead Hart’s 12-hit attack at Long Beach Poly.
Hart (3-1) wiped out a 3-1 deficit with four runs in the third, two in the fourth, five in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Ray Gardocki was three for four with three RBIs, and Casey Burrill had three RBIs. Winning pitcher Andrew Lorraine (2-0) allowed five runs (three earned) and struck out four. Hart will play host to El Segundo at 11 this morning.
Crespi 6, Millikan 5--Chris Romero singled to score Tim Weir and cap a four-run Crespi rally in the seventh. That wiped out a four-run seventh by Millikan, which parlayed a walk and four singles into four runs.
In the Crespi seventh, Scott Barton and Mark D’Antonio hit back-to-back one-out singles, scoring Don Calabria. Back-to-back walks accounted for another run, and D’Antonio scored when Andy MacDonald reached base on a fielder’s choice. After an intentional walk to John Dempsey, Romero singled to end the game.
Crespi (2-1-1) will play at Banning at 11 this morning for 13th place.
El Segundo 9, Westlake 8--Mike Lieberthal of Westlake hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, but Westlake (2-2) surrendered three runs in the seventh to lose at Westlake in a game marred by nine errors by each team.
With Westlake trailing, 9-7, in the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors loaded the bases. Matt McHendry whacked a fly to center to score a run, but Mike Eby was picked off first to end the game.
Westlake’s Tim Falsken was two for three with a double. Lieberthal had five RBIs, the other coming on a sacrifice fly. Westlake will play at Long Beach Poly today at 11 a.m.
Saugus 4, Alhambra 2--Senior left-hander Scott Warr threw a five-hitter to lead Saugus at home. Warr (1-0) struck out four and walked one.
First baseman Roger Salkeld was three for three with a double and Darrell Davis was two for three for Saugus (2-1-1), which plays at Arcadia today at 11 a.m.
Arcadia 10, Burroughs 5--Arcadia scored five times in the fourth inning to take a 10-3 lead and control of the game.
Burroughs senior Chris Westbury was two for three, including a triple, and had two RBIs. Westbury, however, who started for Burroughs (2-2), was chased in the third inning as Arcadia (3-1) scored four times. Burroughs plays Alhambra at home today at 11 a.m.
HIGHLAND HALL TOURNAMENT
Highland Hall 13, Valley Torah 3--Jakob Jensen pitched a two-hitter, struck out seven and allowed one earned run in a game shortened to six innings by darkness at Petit Park.
