Roundup : Santa Clara Overpowers Washington, 78-55
Coach Lou Cvijanovich of Santa Clara High School gave senior center Junious (Bubba) Burrage a bear hug when the latter left the court in the fourth quarter Saturday night. It was not so much because it was Burrage’s 18th birthday, but because it was Burrage’s offensive barrage that helped put the Saints into the State final.
Burrage scored 19 points as Oxnard Santa Clara defeated Easton Washington, 78-55, in the Southern California Regional Division IV boys’ final at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Santa Clara (24-4), which won its record-setting 10th Southern Section title last week, used its superior inside strength to knock off Washington (26-6).
Burrage stands 6 feet 7 inches, and his front-line mates are John McGill and Shon Tarver, both 6-5. The trio combined for 53 points.
Girls’ Division IV
Wasco 40, Oxnard Santa Clara 38--Despite facing a triple-team, Cal State Long Beach-bound forward Marsheela Harriston scored eight of Wasco’s nine points in the fourth quarter and finished with 23 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Tigers to their first State final.
Harriston gave Wasco (23-2) a 39-38 lead with two free throws.
Tami Adkins of Santa Clara (28-2) missed a running three-pointer with four seconds left.
Boys’ Division V
Bel-Air Prep 50, Reedley Immanuel 49--Bel-Air Prep’s Jason Plazola nailed an eight-foot follow shot with five seconds left to send the Bruins to their first state final.
Bel-Air Prep (23-8) made only three of 10 shots in the fourth quarter as Immanuel (22-6) rallied from a 14-point third-quarter deficit and nearly stole a win.
Girls’ Division V
San Luis Obispo Mission Prep 52, Avenal 48--Chris Mott scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter to lead Mission Prep to its first appearance in a state final.
