Pope Appoints Bishops to Florida, Indiana Posts

WASHINGTON — Pope John Paul II on Tuesday announced that he is sending Bishop John Favalora, currently bishop of Alexandria, La., to St. Petersburg, Fla., and is naming the Rev. Gerald Gettelfinger, vicar general of the archdiocese of Indianapolis, to be bishop of Evansville, Ind.
Favalora, 53, succeeds Bishop Thomas Larkin, who resigned in November for health reasons. Gettelfinger, 53, succeeds Bishop Francis Shea, who last year turned 75, the mandatory retirement age for bishops.
