Several dozen park rangers and Inyo County sheriff’s deputies searched the Death Valley National Monument desert area for a 38-year-old Bismarck, N.D., man whose car was found abandoned last Friday in an isolated area about a quarter of a mile off California 190. Inside the vehicle, rangers found Roy Hagel’s car keys, wallet and luggage. The car was not disabled and there was no evidence of foul play, Chief Park Ranger Dale Antonich said. Search crews aided by dogs and helicopters followed footprints away from the car for about six miles but then lost track of them. Gary Hagel told Bismarck police that his brother had not been heard from since March 6.
