Prep Roundup : Rice Pitches Fountain Valley Past Los Alamitos for 2-1 Softball Victory
Rae Rice pitched a one-hitter as Fountain Valley High School defeated Los Alamitos, 2-1, Wednesday in a nonleague softball game at Fountain Valley.
Rice (3-1) had 15 strikeouts and two walks for the Barons (5-1-1). Los Alamitos is 2-3.
In other nonleague softball:
Mater Dei 2, Marina 1--Sundy Mosqueda, who was three for four, scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the seventh for Mater Dei. Theresa Conway added a home run for Mater Dei (4-1-1).
In Olympic League softball:
Orange Lutheran 6, Santa Margarita 3--Pam Marty had two singles, scored two runs and drove in two runs to lead the Lancers (2-1, 1-0) at Orange Lutheran.
In the Laguna Hills tournament:
Dana Hills 2, Trabuco Hills 0--Janae Deffenbaugh (1-0) allowed 10 hits and struck out three for Dana Hills (1-2) in a consolation game at Alicia Park in Mission Viejo. Deffenbaugh also singled home two runs in the third.
In nonleague golf:
Brea-Olinda 199, Loara 230--Craig Botch shot a par 35 to lead the Wildcats (6-0) at Dad Miller golf course.
University 213, Foothill 226--Treg Miller shot a two-over-par 38 to lead University at Rancho San Joaquin golf course. University is 3-2.
Valencia 200, La Quinta 262--The victory was Valencia’s 40th consecutive over the past four seasons. Chris Tidland of Valencia shot par 36. Valencia is 3-0 this season.
In nonleague boys’ swimming:
Brea-Olinda 94, Magnolia 50--Jeff Anton and Ray Schwengel had Southern Section qualifying times for the Wildcats (3-0) at Magnolia. Anton qualified in the 100-yard butterfly (54.99 seconds) and Ray Schwengel in the 100 breaststroke (104.66).
Canyon 88, Orange 66--Matt Maresh of Orange qualified for the Southern Section meet in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.81).
Laguna Hills 93, El Modena 57--Brian Fischer and Shuichi Matsumoto qualified for the Southern Section meet for host Laguna Hills (3-1). Fischer won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.42 and the 500 freestyle in 4:44.12. Matsumoto won the 100 butterfly in 58.0 and the 100 backstroke in 59.69.
In Orange League tennis:
Savanna 11, Anaheim 7--Host Savanna swept the doubles sets. Mike Switzer and Joon Yim, the Rebels’ No. 1 doubles team, won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.
Valencia 12, Western 6--Danny Yu swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, as the Tigers (10-2, 6-0) won eight of nine singles sets (10-2, 6-0).
In nonleague tennis:
Irvine 12, Edison 6--Irvine won eight of nine singles sets at home. Corey Beacham and Yoshi Mori both swept in singles for the Vaqueros (3-3).
Laguna Beach 10, Estancia 8--Jon Leach, Laguna Beach’s No. 1 singles player, won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. Leach, a sophomore, is 9-0 this season. Laguna Beach is 3-0; Estancia is 2-1.
Mater Dei 10, Fountain Valley 8--Mater Dei’s Dax Peterson, a senior, swept his singles sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0. Peterson’s brother, Adam, a freshman, also swept at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-6, 6-2. Mater Dei is 5-1.
Mission Viejo 13, Huntington Beach 5--The doubles team of Dave Allen and Vince Cheng swept their sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, to lead the Diablos (7-0) at home.
Woodbridge 13, Foothill 5--Alex Stienhardt swept his singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the Warriors (5-2) at home.
In nonleague boys’ track and field:
Katella 71, Foothill 56--Kevin Carlson won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet 5 1/2 inches for the Knights (1-1) at Katella.
In Garden Grove League volleyball:
La Quinta 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Paul Price had 10 kills and three service aces as the Aztecs (1-2, 1-0) swept, 15-10, 16-14, 15-9, at Rancho Alamitos.
Pacifica 3, Santiago 1--Colin Severn had 22 kills to lead Pacifica (1-1) to a 15-6, 8-15, 15-8, 15-12 victory.
