The Colleges : Pony Softball Tournament : Fullerton Wins Pair of Shutouts
Ann Van Dortrecht pitched a two-hitter, striking out eight, to give Cal State Fullerton a 5-0 victory over Utah in the Titans’ second game Thursday in the Pony softball tournament at Fullerton.
Buffy Sanchez got two hits for the Titans (22-5) in that game.
Earlier Thursday, Shireen Campbell pitched a one-hitter as Fullerton defeated Akron, 1-0.
The Titans scored in the third inning. Sanchez led off with a single and Missy Coombes tripled to right.
In other tournament games:
Texas A&M; 7, Akron 6 (10 innings)--Michelle Mayfield’s sacrifice scored Erika Erickson with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th for Texas A&M.;
Utah 8, Texas A&M; 0--Utah scored five runs in the first inning, two on a triple by Karen Donaldson.
Fresno State 8, Bowling Green 0--Former Edison High School star Terry Carpenter pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven, for the Bulldogs. It was the fifth consecutive shutout for Carpenter (12-1), who has thrown 36 consecutive innings without allowing a run.
Fresno State 4, Oregon 1--Former Sunny Hills High School player Gina LoPiccolo hit a solo home run and Carie Dever pitched a one-hitter for the Bulldogs.
California 4, Cal Poly Pomona 1--Erin Cassidy (8-5) pitched a three-hitter for the victory.
California 6, Northwestern 0--Robyn Burgess pitched a three-hitter.
Northwestern 7, New Mexico State 6--The Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.
New Mexico State 1, Cal Poly Pomona 0--Cindy Michik hit a home run in the top of the seventh to give New Mexico State the victory over seventh-ranked Pomona.
Oklahoma State 6, Cal State Long Beach 0--Oklahoma State scored six runs in the fifth, two on a bases-loaded double by Shari Johnson. Michele Smith (6-1) pitched a three-hitter for the Cowboys.
