College Baseball Roundup : Home Run in 11th Lifts Florida St. Over Titans
Marc Roman hit a home run to lead off the 11th inning to lift Florida State to a 6-5 victory over Cal State Fullerton Friday in a nonconference baseball game at Florida State.
Roman’s home run came off loser Sam Colarusso (2-2), who was working in relief. Rick Kimball (2-2), also pitching in relief, got the victory for Florida State (22-8).
Dave Staton hit a home run with one out in the eighth to tie the score, 5-5, for Fullerton (17-8). It was his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
The Titans had opened a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Brent Mayne hit a three-run double. Fullerton increased its lead to 4-1 in the fifth on a single by Randy Graves and an RBI triple by Mate Borgogno.
Florida State (22-8) scored two runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.
In another nonconference game:
Gonzaga 9, UC Irvine 3--Pitcher Warren Ayala went the distance, giving up seven hits, three runs (one earned), two walks and striking out seven for Gonzaga (7-5) at Anteater Field. Irvine’s Stacy Parker, a senior center fielder, went two for four, including a bases-loaded single in the ninth. He had two RBIs for Irvine (8-14-1).
