The head of Lebanon’s Muslim-led government appealed for peace negotiations after a 10-hour artillery barrage that turned parts of Beirut into an inferno. “A solution for Lebanon should not be negotiated through violence and guns but through dialogue among Lebanese,” Acting Premier Salim Hoss said. Meanwhile, the head of a rival Christian government, Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun, accused Syrian gunners of trying to assassinate him by shelling the presidential place in suburban Baabda.
