A thief at a fast-food restaurant who delayed his getaway to scoop up his bagful of burgers that scattered after he collided with his pursuer remained at large Friday.

“The funny part was he picked up his food before he ran to his car,” said Tony Mozingo, 26, of Hattiesburg, who tried to nab the thief last week at a Krystal restaurant. “It was like that was the most important part of the robbery--his food.”

Mozingo said he was standing behind a man who had ordered some hamburgers. After he got the food, the clerk opened the register and the man reached in and pulled out a fistful of money and fled with the money and the food.

Mozingo gave chase and began taunting him, yelling that he was “right behind” him. The bandit stopped, turned and ran toward Mozingo.

“He was running full steam, and I was holding my ground,” the law student said. “He knocked me down and went over the top of me. Something, I think it was his knee, hit my head.”

They both fell to the ground, and the burgers in the bag scattered. The bandit took the time to gather up his burgers, got into a black sports car and sped away, Mozingo said.
