Suns’ Johnson Wins NBA’s 6th Man Award
Eddie Johnson of the Phoenix Suns, who led all NBA non-starters by averaging 21.5 points per game, today was named winner of the league’s Sixth Man Award.
In voting by a nationwide panel of 85 press members who regularly cover the NBA--three from each of the 25 teams and 10 representatives of the national media--Johnson received 33 votes.
Thurl Bailey of Utah was second with 26 votes.
He was followed by Dennis Rodman of Detroit with 17 votes, John Williams of Washington with 4, Xavier McDaniel of Seattle with 2, and Ron Anderson of Philadelphia, Ricky Pierce of Milwaukee and John Williams of Cleveland with 1 each.
The 6-foot, 9-inch Johnson, an eight-year veteran in his second season with Phoenix after six years with the Kings in Kansas City and Sacramento, helped the Suns improve their record by 27 wins over last season.
He ranked 19th in the NBA in scoring and was sixth in 3-point field goal percentage at .413 on 71-for-172.
