USC Gets $1 Million for Biology Studies
A $1-million grant has been received by USC from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to enhance undergraduate biological science programs, officials announced this week.
M. Michael Appleman, director of instructional programs for the USC Department of Biological Sciences, said the funds will make “an important contribution to the university’s activities as a major academic and research institution.”
About $350,000 of the grant will be used to encourage and prepare high school students to enter university programs leading to medical and biological science careers.
Another $150,000 will be used to involve more faculty members in instruction and recruitment, and a similar amount will be spent on increasing honors courses and developing state-of-the-art laboratory courses.
The remaining $350,000 is for development and support of outreach programs for high school science teachers.
