Arrest Made in Cabbie’s Killing
A 19-year-old San Diego man was arrested on suspicion of murder Thursday night in the shooting of Michael Anthony Carroll, an independent driver for Coast Cab.
The suspect, Kevin Johnson, is being held without bail at the San Diego County Jail and will be arraigned Tuesday morning, a jail spokeswoman said.
Carroll was robbed and then shot in the head by his fare Monday night near the 5700 block of Bates Street. He died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital.
Sgt. Jerry Callaway of Homicide Team 6 said the team, with the help of the fugitive and the night robbery units, arrested Johnson as he left his home in the 5500 block of University Avenue.
Although Johnson is not a suspect in other recent assaults on cab drivers, Callaway said he is being investigated in connection with two robberies of pizza deliverers that occurred Sunday night in the same area.
Callaway declined to say what evidence led to the arrest of Johnson.
