Telethon From Disneyland to Be Seen in China, U.S.S.R.
The annual Children’s Miracle Network telethon, to be broadcast live from Disneyland for 21 consecutive hours this weekend, will not only be carried by stations across the United States but also will be broadcast in the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union. The telethon’s organizers believe that this is the first time a United States-based telethon will be aired in those countries.
Since it started in 1983, the telethon has raised $170 million for children’s hospitals throughout North America. This year the telethon contributions in China will be used to build the Sino/American Friendship Children’s Hospital in Beijing. In the Soviet Union, the telethon will help raise funds for the 200 children’s hospitals throughout the country.
Locally, Channel 9 will carry the telethon starting Saturday at 6 p.m. Channel 8 in San Diego will join the broadcast at 7 p.m.
