Kurdish exiles said Thursday that troops ringed a town in northeastern Iraq on Wednesday and ordered people to move out, starting what they said was the mass deportation of Kurds.

A spokesman for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in London said that residents of Qalat Dizah, about 10 miles from the Iranian border, have called for a general strike and civil disobedience to resist the deportations.

The spokesman said the Iraqi troops are heavily armed, and tanks were seen at main junctions near Qalat Dizah, which has 100,000 people.
