NCAA Division II Baseball : Balk Puts Cal Poly in Final, 7-6
Bobby Ryan pitched two perfect innings of relief, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo scored the winning run on a balk to beat Slippery Rock (Pa.), 7-6, Thursday night and advance to the championship game of the Division II College World Series at Montgomery, Ala.
The Mustangs (37-25) will play for the title tonight against New Haven (Conn.), a 10-6 winner over Jacksonville State (Ala.).
Cal Poly’s Robert Hale walked with two out in the seventh inning and the score tied, 6-6. He stole second, took third on an error and scored on Kirk Scurpa’s balk.
Cal Poly had just two hits in the game, a three-run homer by Rich Sheppard that gave it a 5-4 lead in the third, and a run-scoring single by Matt Drake in the fourth.
