Lebanese army commander Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun said Friday that fresh fighting is likely to break out unless Syrian troops lift their blockade of the country’s Christian enclave.

“They have to lift the blockade. . . . If not, there is a big risk that fighting will start again,” Aoun told the Visnews television news agency.

Syrian gunners and their Lebanese Muslim allies fired about 30 shells into the sea around Christian ports Friday, security sources said.

It was the heaviest shelling since the Arab League, ending a summit in Casablanca, appealed a week ago to both sides to respect the cease-fire it mediated May 11.

The truce halted 60 days of artillery battles between Aoun’s troops and Syrian forces and their Muslim militia allies.
