Largemouth Bass Biting at Lake Casitas

A strong largemouth bass bite is still in progress at Lake Casitas, with the early risers doing best at the Ventura County reservoir.

Sean Taketa of Simi Valley, fishing along the lake’s rocky shoreline, caught a 13-pound bass. Bob Johnston of Lawndale took a 12-pounder.

LAKE MEAD--Strong winds. Fishing best at 25-45 feet in Overton Arm and Vegas Wash for striped bass to 11 pounds. Anchovies best bet. Other species slow.

LAKE HAVASU--Striped bass beginning to bite on surface, most in the two-pound range. Bigger fish at about 40 feet. Anchovies best bet. Largemouth bass biting on surface plugs in mornings, then plastic worms and jigs during day. Catfish to six pounds biting throughout lake.

BULLHEAD CITY--Striped bass to five pounds biting in river. Drifting anchovies best bet. Largemouth bass providing best action in lake, biting best on waterdogs. Catfish averaging three pounds in river and lake.

SALTON SEA--Orangemouth corvina bite good when wind subsides, primarily at Red Hill. Live bait best bet. Bank fishermen catching croaker from north shore to Bombay Beach.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout biting at 20-30 feet, best at mouth of Cachuma Bay and at north end. Power Bait on small treble hook best bet. Largemouth bass fair, with crank baits and nightcrawlers working, primarily at east and south sides. Catfish biting at east end near mouth of river and at Santa Cruz Bay. Crappie and bluegills slow.

LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass biting close to rocky shoreline in mornings. Bite slows during day. Trout averaging about two pounds, biting best on cheese. Trollers using three-five colors and needlefish lure also doing well. Catfish picking up, biting at 10 feet. Mackerel best bet. Josef Derrfuss, Ventura, 18-pound catfish.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass biting in channel and marina. Largemouth bass biting to 30 feet. Rocks and drop-offs best. Catfish bite consistent at 25-40 feet, averaging seven pounds. Trout biting near shallow sandy areas. Bluegills and crappie fair.

LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass picking up, biting in shallow water. Catfish biting throughout lake. Trout slow.

LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass picking up along north shoreline. Catfish providing most action, moving into shallows between dam and marina. Some limits of trout. Crappie biting along shoreline.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Striped bass biting off points in channel. Catfish biting throughout channel, many over 10 pounds.

BISHOP AREA--Crowley: Sacramento perch active. Trout picking up. South Lake: Fishing best on back side. Sabrina: Several limits of planted rainbows. North Lake: Best in evenings on bubble-and-fly rigs. Pleasant Valley Reservoir: Good for rainbows and some browns.

JUNE LOOP--Shore fishing with Power Bait productive on June. Trollers using gold and blue spinners also doing well. Cutthroat trout biting in deeper water. Gull: Red salmon eggs and marshmallows producing rainbows. Rush Creek: Worms and salmon eggs producing some limits of pan-sized rainbows.

BRIDGEPORT--Lower Twin: Brown trout bite improving. Bridgeport Reservoir: Limits of 12- to 14-inch rainbows the rule for trollers and still fishermen.
