Runner, Swimmer Win Jewish Sports Award
Toby Unger, a cross-country athlete and cheerleader at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, and Jason Klugman, a swimmer at La Quinta High School in Fountain Valley, were named co-winners of the Jewish Young Leaders in Sports award.
Other finalists honored at the recent Jewish Sports Hall of Fame ceremony hosted by the Orange County chapter of the American Friends of the Hebrew University included University High School tennis player Steven Lappin of Irvine; Villa Park High School soccer player Mark Malo and Woodbridge High School tennis player Shana Meyerson, both of Irvine; Corona Del Mar High School water polo player Josh Speyer, and Dana Hills High School track athlete Amanda Wheeland of Dana Point.
Unger and Klugman were awarded scholarships for a summer study program at the Hebrew University of Israel. Olympian Mark Spitz presented the awards.
Ronald T. Shaheen of Tustin was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for the 1989-90 academic year, according to an announcement from the Board of Foreign Scholarship and the U.S. Information Agency. The grant will allow Shaheen, a doctoral student at UCLA, to pursue dissertation research at the University of Venice in Italy for nine months.
A voice student for 12 years, Shaheen earlier received his bachelor of arts degree from Cal State Fullerton.
For his “extremely hard work in both lab and lecture,” Aaron Patton of Buena Park has been named Outstanding Physics Student at Cypress College and is only the fifth Cypress student in 23 years to receive the honor from the American Assn. of Physics Teachers.
First-grader Katherine Chiu, 6, of Irvine’s Eastshore Elementary School, has won a first prize in the National Parent-Teachers Assn.’s reflections contest.
Katherine submitted original piano compositions to the contest that drew entries in art, music and literature from children in other elementary schools.
She was awarded $300. Because of her selection as a national winner, Eastshore School will receive a series of books, according to Ronni Bregman, coordinator and Eastshore PTA president.
Mark K. Spears, 15, of Santa Ana, a member of Boy Scout Troop 339, has attained the rank of Eagle Scout and will be a participant in August at the two-week National Boy Scout of America Jamboree in Washington that will include competition involving Scouting skills.
After receiving his Eagle rank at a Court of Honor, Spears was presented the Robert Thomas trophy for troop leadership. Spears, now a student at McFadden Intermediate School in Santa Ana, will attend Mater Dei High School in September.
Tustin resident A. Buford Hill Jr., president of the Boy Scouts of America, Orange County Council, has been presented the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, given to individuals who have served 25 years or more at the top of their profession. Hill has been a professional with the Boy Scouts for 33 years.
Fountain Valley High School student Edward Rylski, who suffered a stroke but competes in wheelchair hockey, has received a $250 Hal Connolly Scholarship-Athlete Award through the California Governor’s Committee for Employment of Disabled Persons.
The Cypress Public Safety Employees Assn. named agent Stephen Spernak as Officer of the Year, community service officer Holly Creamer as Employee of the Year, Maggie and Al Christ as Citizens of the Year and Officer Douglas McManus as winner of the Chief’s Award.
A television program titled “Quest for the Best,” which was aired on KOCE-TV in Orange County and featured the Southern California High School Marching Band Tournament of Champions, was nominated for an Emmy Award by the Los Angeles Area Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
David Judy of Anaheim and Robin Smith of Ontario produced the program and received proclamations recognizing their nomination from the city of Santa Ana and the County Board of Supervisors.
Superior Court Judge Betty Lou Lamoreaux was named Judge of the Year by the Orange County Women Lawyers and will be honored by the group at a “This Is Your life” program that will recount her careers, which include roles as an actress and singer in light opera in San Francisco before she became an attorney and judge.
