SportScope : Heat Plays Arizona Soccer Club in Drive to Catch San Diego

The L.A. Heat soccer team will be in Mesa, Ariz., on Saturday night against the Arizona Condors in a World Soccer League South Division game. The Heat (6-3), coming off a 6-0 victory over Santa Barbara, is in second place in the division, closely chasing the San Diego Nomads who have played two less games at 6-1. The Heat has two of the WSL’s scoring leaders in Billy Thompson with five goals and one assist (11 points) and Jeff Hooker with three goals and four assists (10). The Heat will be trying to improve on its 3-2 road record. Arizona is tied for last in the division at 2-6 and has allowed a league-high 23 goals but has been competitive at home at 2-3.

Five players were selected off the Loyola Marymount University baseball team in this week’s pro baseball draft. Junior catcher Miah Bradbury was the highest choice, going to the Phillies in the sixth round. Senior infielder Rick Allen was chosen in the 10th round by the Reds, senior pitcher Kalani Bush went in the 24th to the Cubs and junior pitcher Steve Surico was taken by Seattle in the 37th round. Senior outfielder Brian Turang was also taken by Seattle in a late round. Senior Travis Tarchione, one of the Lions’ top hitters for several seasons, was passed over, as was junior relief ace Darryl Scott.

Registration is open for the annual Manhattan Beach Open Tennis Tournament. The single-elimination tournament will be played the weekends of July 22-23 and 29-30. Entry deadline is June 30. The tournament format includes men’s and women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles and senior (ages 60 and older) men’s doubles. Entry fee is $8 for singles and $12 for doubles. Entries may be submitted in person or by mail at the Recreation Department in Manhattan Beach City Hall, 1400 Highland Ave. Entry forms are available at the department and at Live Oak Park, 1901 Valley Drive.

Mira Costa High will be the site of a basketball day camp as well as a series of Friday night clinics this summer. The Mustang Summer Basketball day camp will be held from noon to 5 p.m. June 26-30 for boys in grades three through eight at the Mira Costa boys gym. Cost is $70. The night clinics will be held from 5 to 7 Fridays, June 30 through July 28, and is for boys in the seventh and eighth grades. Cost is $40. For information, call (213) 545-3685.
