Members of the Taft High School academic decathlon team received a commendation from the Los Angeles City Council on Friday for winning the national championship recently.

Councilwoman Joy Picus said the Woodland Hills team had “achieved the ultimate academically,” adding that it is important to praise youths for academic achievements as well as prowess in sports.

“It is very seldom that people get praise for using their minds,” commented Councilman Nate Holden.

Holden said he considered the team not only the national winners but the international winners as well, because the students beat teams from Northern Ireland and Brazil.

The Taft team won the national decathlon championship on May 1 in Providence, R.I.
