Mickelson Sits Alone in Second in NCAA Golf

Arizona State’s Phil Mickelson, a two-time section player of the year for University of San Diego High School, is alone in second place after two rounds of the NCAA golf championship in Edmond, Okla.

Mickelson shot a par 70 for a 136 total on the Oak Tree Country Club East Course. He is a shot behind individual leader Kevin Johnson of Clemson, who shot 69 Friday. First-round leader Robert Gamez of Arizona and Jeff Lee of Oklahoma are tied for third at 137.

BASEBALL

Mt. Carmel High graduate Dan Rumsey was drafted by the San Francisco Giants during the second day of the summer amateur baseball draft. Rumsey, who recently completed a four-year career at Arizona State, will report to the Giants’ minor league club in Everett, Wash. A second-team All-American pick as a junior, Rumsey hit .293 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs this year. Rumsey trails only Bob Horner and Barry Bonds on ASU’s all-time home run list with 44.
