WORLD : Kadafi Seeks U.S., Soviet Links
LONDON — Libyan leader Col. Moammar Kadafi, taking a conciliatory stand, described the Bush Administration as “reasonable and mature” and invited U.S. and Soviet companies to explore for oil and gas in Libya, the Libyan news agency said today.
Kadafi said he hopes to establish balanced relations with the United States and the Soviet Union, JANA said in a report monitored in London.
The remarks followed a speech marking the 19th anniversary of the expulsion of U.S. air bases from Libya.
Kadafi’s socialist regime drew closer to the Soviet Union after it concluded an arms deal with Moscow in 1975, while relations between the United States and Libya have been poor for at least a decade.
