Maxim Tarasov of the Soviet Union set a world junior pole vault record, clearing 18 feet 8 1/4 inches, but finished second to Olympic champion Sergei Bubka in an International Amateur Athletic Federation Grand Prix track and field meet at Volgograd in the Soviet Union.
Tarasov, an 18-year-old from Yaroslavl, northeast of Moscow, broke the world junior record of 18-6 1/2 shared by Rodion Gataulin of the Soviet Union and Istvan Bagyula of Hungary. Less than an hour later, Bubka cleared 19-4 1/4.
