From Times staff and wire service reports

Rodney Peete, USC baseball and football star, said he expects to decide this month whether his career will be in professional baseball or football.

Peete, selected in the last two baseball drafts by the Oakland Athletics and chosen in the sixth round of the NFL college draft by the Detroit Lions, said at a Greeley football camp Sunday that he plans to pick one sport or the other. He said he will not join Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson as a two-sport professional athlete.

“For those guys (Sanders and Jackson), I say more power to them,” Peete said. “But for me, it’s impossible. A quarterback needs to have the off-season as a time to get ready for the year. Plus, I think it’d be tough for a quarterback to come out in October and have any impact.”

Peete worked out with the A’s last week and said he is optimistic about his future in baseball. He said he is equally confident about his career in football if he chooses that option.
